Through hands-on volunteerism and support for local organizations, the Shields team is helping address immediate needs while investing in stronger communities for the future.
From preparing and distributing hundreds of meals at Cathedral Kitchen to sponsoring a fundraiser supporting children’s health and life services, Shields Business Solutions is finding hands-on ways to give back to the South Jersey and Greater Philadelphia communities. The company’s recent and upcoming community efforts show how employee involvement and strong nonprofit partnerships can meet immediate needs while creating opportunities for a stronger future.
“These experiences allow our employees to work alongside their neighbors and see firsthand the difference local organizations make every day,” says Troy Teschner, Vice President of Service Operations. “We’re grateful for every opportunity to contribute and deepen our connection to the communities we call home.”
Investing in Our Community Through Service
On August 5, the Shields team volunteered at Cathedral Kitchen in Camden, NJ, partnering with the kitchen’s dedicated staff and volunteers to prepare and distribute 383 meals, along with snack bags for individuals seeking additional food support.
Throughout the afternoon, Cathedral Kitchen sous chef Hector Feliciano taught Shields team members about the organization’s Culinary Arts Training Workforce Development Program. Since 2009, the program has provided unemployed, at-risk, and low-income Camden residents with the skills, training, and support needed to pursue meaningful careers and achieve greater economic independence.
“We’re proud to support organizations like Cathedral Kitchen that are making a lasting difference and are grateful to our employees who generously volunteered their time and talents,” says Michelle Thomas, Human Resource Coordinator . “Their commitment reflects our company’s dedication to community engagement and the belief that meaningful partnerships create meaningful change.”
The experience also reinforced that Cathedral Kitchen’s impact extends well beyond addressing food insecurity. Through workforce development and education, the organization is creating opportunities that strengthen individuals, families, and the broader community.
Later in the month, as individuals and families exhaust their monthly food supplies, Cathedral Kitchen’s daily meal distribution can increase to nearly 700 meals per day, underscoring the critical and ongoing need they help meet in the community.
“We encourage others to join us in supporting Cathedral Kitchen’s mission,” says Thomas, s. “Whether through volunteering, donating, or raising awareness of its programs, every contribution helps expand its impact and create opportunities for those it serves. Together, we can help build stronger communities—one meal, one opportunity, and one act of service at a time.”
Shields employees also plan to participate in another local meal-service volunteer event in September.
Supporting Local Children with Health and Life Services
The Shields team continues its community outreach in September as the Presenting Sponsor of the Kids-N-Hope Foundation’s first annual Community Day & Cow Chip Bingo. “The communities we serve are also where our employees, customers and their families live and work,” Teschner says. “Sponsoring Community Day & Cow Chip Bingo is one way Shields can help strengthen those connections and give back tangibly.”
The Kids-N-Hope Foundation supports children’s health and life services and music therapy programs at area hospitals and nonprofit organizations. The organization’s funding benefits pediatric programs, children’s centers, and after-school music initiatives that promote children’s health and well-being.
Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at American Heritage Credit Union in Philadelphia, the event will raise money to support children’s health and life services in the community. Cow Chip Bingo will take place from noon to 2 p.m., with participants purchasing squares on a giant bingo field for a chance to win a grand prize of up to $7,500.
The day will also include food trucks, vendors, raffles, and a family fun zone with inflatables, face painting, a petting zoo, and more.
“Supporting Kids-N-Hope gives us another opportunity to invest in the health and well-being of children and families in our community,” Thomas says. “We’re proud to help bring people together for an event that combines family fun with a meaningful purpose.”
